Husband and wife team Alice and Simon specialise in the servicing, repair and restoration of antique mechanical clocks. They are fairly new to The Fairground, having previously worked in establishments in Winchester but decided to set up their own business towards the end of 2017.
Simon served his apprenticeship at the formerly named G.E. Marsh where he worked for nearly 30 years, attaining Freedom of the Clockmaker’s Company by Servitude and gaining invaluable experience from the variety of clocks he undertook to service and repair. His specialities lie in his ability to understand complex movements, often spending time observing and taking detailed notes.
Alice spent several years at the bench before undertaking a BA in Horology at Birmingham City University which she completed, attaining a First, in 2016. Her interests lie in crafting replacement parts and she most enjoys time spent working on the lathe. She hopes to master the skills for wheel and pinion cutting and offer this as a service in the future.
In their workshop you will find a range of different sized metal turning lathes amongst other specialist cleaning equipment and precision tools. Their work often requires high levels of concentration and a lot of patience but they offset this with lunchtime walks with their dog Jasper who can also be found in the workshop.
Taylor & Kerby offer a house visit service within a 25 mile radius of the workshop to collect larger clocks or for those who are less able to travel.
